| Perhaps the most attractive of Granville Leveson Gower's antiquarian interiors, it is what the Victorians called 'rich in old oak'. The walls are entirely lined with carved panelling made up from various sources and there is an elaborate overmantel. The fireplace has pretty blue and white Delft tiles, and the bow window has a raised window seat from which there are attractive views over the gardens. The furniture includes a pair of splendid Chippendale chairs (based on a plate in his Director) and a set of black and gold painted late Georgian wheel-back chairs. The portrait of Kitty Fisher, the courtesan, is by Philip Mercier and recalls the legend that she was once a tenant at Titsey. |
